How often do we see gadgets that have had their place in the sun rise like the phoenix and witness a revival of fortunes? Trace your memory back to the summer of 2005, when a hand-held gaming system, with an outlandish name, was released much to the chagrin of enthusiasts who swear by Nintendo and Playstation. Christened ‘Gizmondo’, the gaming console would sink into oblivion a year later amidst numerous controversies involving the manufacturer Tiger Telematics’ employees, Stefan Eriksson in particular. The furore ensured that a seventh generation technological marvel would ride into the sunset in no time. However, like all stories of ‘the risen’, the Gizmondo is making a comeback. Despite all the ridicule, it is quite certain that this gadget hasn’t lost its charm.
For those of you who were in the stone age all this while, the Gizmondo was a rarity. The gadget was and is, perhaps, among the very few devices with GPRS and GPS technology. Yes...it could do a lot more than enable pulse-racing games. With a 0.3MP VGA camera, MP3/WAV/MIDI music and WMV/MPEG4 video capability to boot, the Gizmondo did manage to carve a niche for itself. Now, the re-launched powerhouse would see the addition of a separate graphics card from Nvidia and Windows CE 6.0. And if you didn’t know, the gadget could be used to send email, SMS/MMS as well. Gizmondo boss Carl Freer has promised a late 2008 release and this time, we hope that justice is done to this amazing gadget.
